Seagrass meadows spread across the sandy seabed, and form underwater habitats that protect coastlines, support marine life, and store carbon. Unlike seaweeds, seagrasses are flowering plants that form the foundation of healthy coastal ecosystems. They connect the wellbeing of the environment with that of local communities. What Are Seagrasses?
Seagrasses are often confused with seaweeds, but they are in fact flowering plants that have adapted to life in the sea. With roots, rhizomes, leaves, and flowers, they grow in shallow, sunlit lagoons and on sandy seabeds. These underwater meadows create habitats for a wide range of marine life and help to stabilise and protect coastal areas. In Mauritius, five species of seagrasses have been identified, together forming an important part of the island’s coastal ecosystems and supporting both biodiversity and local communities.
Why Are Seagrasses Important?
Although they are seldom noticed, seagrasses rank among the most valuable ecosystems on the planet. Their meadows serve as nurseries for fish, sea cucumbers, and turtles, providing safe havens where young marine life can grow. They act as a natural shield for coastlines, slowing waves and trapping sediment to keep waters clear and beaches intact. At the same time, they perform one of the most vital climate functions of all: capturing and storing carbon in their roots and surrounding sediments for centuries, earning them a place among the world’s most effective “blue carbon” sinks. For communities in Mauritius, seagrasses underpin livelihoods through fisheries, tourism, and cultural heritage, even as they continue to sustain the health of the ocean.


What Are the Threats to Seagrasses?
Despite their importance, seagrass meadows are disappearing at a troubling rate. In Mauritius, these ecosystems are under pressure from several directions. Extreme weather linked to climate change, such as cyclones and storm surges, can uproot entire beds. Run-off from agriculture and untreated wastewater pollute lagoons, altering water quality and smothering plants. Coastal construction projects transform the coast and reclaim beaches, smothering and removing seagrasses in the process. Daily human activities such as trampling, anchoring, and heavy use of lagoons gradually erode what remains, while certain fishing methods disturb sediments and damage root systems. Each of these pressures weakens a natural defence system that would otherwise protect the island from erosion, biodiversity loss, and the impacts of climate change.
Coastal Erosion in Mauritius
Mauritius is celebrated for its sandy beaches and turquoise lagoons, but these landscapes as well as seascapes are changing. The removal of natural buffers such as mangroves and seagrasses, together with stronger storms and rising seas, has accelerated coastal erosion across the island. Without the stabilising power of these ecosystems, waves strike with greater force, stripping away beaches, threatening infrastructure, and undermining the fisheries and tourism industries on which many livelihoods depend. Coastal erosion in Mauritius is no longer just an environmental issue; it has become a pressing social and economic challenge that affects communities island-wide.


Nature-Based Solutions
In the search for answers, nature itself provides some of the most effective solutions. Instead of relying solely on seawalls and artificial barriers, Mauritius is now looking to restore and strengthen the ecosystems that once protected its shores. Seagrass restoration is at the heart of this approach. By replanting and rehabilitating degraded meadows, we can revive their ability to stabilise sediments, absorb the energy of waves, and bring life back into the lagoon. These restored meadows not only protect coastlines but also enhance biodiversity, improve water clarity, and lock away carbon that would otherwise fuel climate change. By combining sound science with community collaboration, nature-based solutions turn ecological restoration into a practical pathway for healthier coasts, stronger livelihoods, and greater resilience in the face of a changing climate.
Ecosystem Services of Seagrasses
Seagrass meadows provide a wide range of ecosystem services that directly benefit both nature and people. As natural coastal defences, they reduce wave energy and limit erosion, protecting beaches and infrastructure. They act as carbon sinks by capturing and storing carbon in their roots and sediments, making them important allies in climate change mitigation. Seagrasses also sustain food security by supporting fisheries, offering nursery grounds for many species of fish and invertebrates that later populate reefs and open waters. In addition, their presence improves water clarity by trapping sediments, which benefits both marine biodiversity and tourism. These services highlight why seagrasses are often described as one of the most valuable, yet undervalued, ecosystems in the ocean.
