This study investigates how fish populations associated with seagrass meadows are genetically connected across Mauritius, using tissue samples from key species collected in both natural and restored lagoons. By analysing population structure and gene flow, the research will reveal how restoration enhances ecological connectivity and supports sustainable fisheries management.

Launch of Connectivity Study: Tracking Fish Populations Across Mauritius

We have now begun a new connectivity study to understand how fish populations linked to seagrass meadows are connected across Mauritius. This research focuses on collecting tissue samples from economically important fish species that rely on seagrass habitats, such as those using meadows as nursery grounds.

 

Sampling is taking place in lagoons across the island, including both natural seagrass meadows and the recently restored site at Roches Noires. By analysing these samples with population genetics, we will be able to identify whether fish populations in different lagoons are part of the same genetic stock or if they are more isolated.

 

This work is crucial for several reasons. It will show whether restored meadows become integrated into larger ecological networks, and whether they can serve as stepping stones for fish populations. It will also provide valuable knowledge for fisheries management, helping ensure that the species communities that sustain livelihoods remain healthy and resilient.

 

By combining this connectivity study with our eDNA monitoring, we will gain a much clearer picture of how seagrass meadows support biodiversity, fisheries, and coastal resilience across Mauritius.
